Astronauts
Tim Peake
Tim went outside the ISS to fix a part that had gone wrong.
He started his astronaut training in 2009 with ESA (say ee-sa). ESA is Europe's space agency.
He had to learn Russian as he went into space in a Russian spacecraft.
For part of his training he had to live under the sea for 12 days and live in caves for 1 week! This tested how well he could live away from normal life. He had to learn how to survive in the woods too. He might have needed these skills if his spacecraft had crash-landed on his return to Earth.

Before he was an astronaut he flew helicopters.

The UK's first astronaut
Helen Sharman was the UK's first astronaut. She was a scientist (say sigh-en-tist) at Mars, the chocolate company. Her life changed in 1989 when she replied to a radio advert. The advert was by the Russian space agency and it wanted the best person to train as an astronaut. Helen Sharman was the best person out of 13,000 (13 thousand) people who replied to the advert.
